Where does one begin discussing hiking and backpacking
in New Mexico, the task is nothing short of daunting. The state of New
Mexico comprises
121,598
square miles and is the fifth largest state in the US. New Mexico offers
vast wilderness areas spanning a large and geologically unique geographic
area.
To the east, the state is covered by the great plains. The central part
of the state is home of the southern terminus of the Rocky Mountains as
well as the Rio Grande River Basin. It is in this central third that we live
and play at the foot of the rockies. The Pecos Wilderness, Carson and Latirs
offer the backpacking enthusiast thousands of miles of backpacking adventure.
To the South the state is a classic Basin and range system split by the
north to south flow of the Rio Grande river. This area is marked by rugged
Mountain ranges separated by desert basins. The Guadalupes, The Mogollon,
Organ, Sacramento and san Andres Mountains are all of prominence in this
region of the state.
Exploring New Mexico via foot and trail can be an extremely rewarding experience.
I have primarily focused on areas in and around Santa Fe but with Taos to
the North and The Gila wilderness to the South, a lifetime of hoofing awaits
the curious explorer. The New Mexico environment can be as punishing as
it is rewarding. Use this as a jump off point for your next hiking or backpacking
trip in New Mexico. Happy Trails.
